Young Israel of Hancock Park

Projects
Location: Los Angeles, CA

The design concept for the renovation of Young Israel of Hancock Park is based upon the principles of connectivity, urban design, sustainability, religious symbolism and context. While many of the proposed materials suggest traditional values, the manner in which they are combined elevates both the design and the spiritual experience in a fresh, modern way. Natural daylighting plays a dominant role in the transformation of existing spaces into awe inspiring settings that lead to a more spiritual frame of mind. Cutouts in the structure allow light and lend an uplifting transcendent glow. Scale, height, light and color interplay to enhance the form and presence.

Triangles unify the exterior and interior of the synagogue, adding soft natural light and a heightened sense of spirituality. Visually, these shapes lift the height of walls, both inside and out, causing the eye to gaze upward and making the spaces feel generous and dramatically inspirational. As a transitional space, the lobby is a welcoming, place for the community members to greet one another and talk without disrupting the services. Inside, a muted, warm color palette creates a calming environment that is conducive to prayer and also encourages the heart and soul to rejoice. Enhanced acoustics promote audibility and good sound quality, while excellent lighting provides functionality and ease of reading.
